Essential by The Minimalists (Book Review and Application)

I have heard The Minimalists since 2016. One of their challenge is the 30-day minimalism game. It is exhausting moving to three houses within a year. Man, one could tell I had so much stuff! Clothes and accessories piled and compressed in a limited space I was paying for.

One of the stressful point I had is when I became a mother. There was so much “baby” stuff accumulated in our studio apartment. We had this baby rocker that my son never once slept and cried within minutes of seating. He simply didn’t like it. The endless freebies from “mom & baby” events were more beneficial to the relatives back in the Philippines. Though I get more to be happy in giving.

Thanks to my friend, Bea (follow her) who recommended an ebook website *ooooops it’s a secret. Hoping there will be an ebook available by The Minimalist and voila! I finished the book within four days with stops in between. Definitely a progress as I didn’t finish any book the previous year.

After watching reviews and comparing devices, finally bought a tab. Yes, not an iPad. Though I am not really an Apple fan because the upgrade and accessories are too expensive for me. Making it multi-functional for my son’s online class (though 95% is for personal use 🤣).

Bought at Lulu while the additional accessories were purchased at Amazon (saved 400+ AED in comparison to iPad vs tab + accessories).

I’ll summarize into three quotes that resonated in my mind whenever I face challenging impulsive situations:

If we have less money, then we must be more intentional with how we spend it.

We can focus on what we have instead of what we don’t have. We already have everything we need.

Success is perspectival: it doesn’t have a template.

Having just enough to get by is a discipline any one would start off (unless one is from the billionare heirs). Minimalism doesn’t promote poverty nor aesthetically “uniform” pantry (things you see on Tiktok). It doesn’t work that way, it is a heart check of our real motive. I don’t recommend to stay mediocre either, as by choice we prefer to be located overseas for our future plans.

First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.

Proverbs 30:8-9

Even until now, whenever there are baby clothes that doesn’t fit, my inner self cannot held it for too long, or keep in a storage. Some may say, keep it just in case. Just in case we accidentally have another child (which will never happen). I’m not giving any value to clothes as I am focused on my son and my mental state. It makes me wonder why I held for so long plus the idea of buying more storage bins (triggers to add more stuff).

I didn’t look down at anyone’s decision but rather my inner self is tired of arranging stuff. Too much stuff is an additional task to my daily chore. Sometimes I leave it there for a few days and sulk in the mess. I am bad at organizing things, that’s why I should have less stuff as a person. That way, my mind is clear and relieved when I complete all the chores within a day.

As the saying goes, there is enough for everyone’s need but not everyone’s greed.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12

Money is a powerful tool. It is neutral but the way we use and spend is an emotional and spiritual thing. The more stuff and the easier we attain, makes us unhappy and discontent. I know because after buying that * bracelet, the bliss was for a moment and I ended up not using it because it might get scratched 🤦🏻‍♀️

Plugging their accounts as a help of their valuable content contribution in society:
